This blog shall document my semester abroad, beginning 28 August 2011.
Welcome to Poitiers.
LE PARIS POST
Modified from the original version, which to my extreme consternation was suddenly lost after Safari froze. At first I wanted to punch somebody or something, but it is what it is, c’est la vie, so I present instead a photo diary from my weekend in Paris. With brief captions / commentary.
Eurail pass / probably not the best idea, it doesn’t seem like I’m going to recoup the upfront cost :/
Our hostel : Young & Happy! clean (enough), friendly people, awesome location (Latin Quarter), ice cold showers….. (the heater went bust and of course the repairman couldn’t be bothered to stop by. Dang French! It’s called a work ethic.)
Hostel lobby / studying Rick Steves and the metro map in the morning
Sacré Coeur / Montmartre
MORE AFTER THE JUMP
Nothing beats a quiet stroll through a Parisian cemetery / here, at Montmartre
A rather sad looking fellow
Edgar Degas in Montmartre

Scaffold to the sun.
Compared to the film, Moulin Rouge in the flesh is rather disappointing.

Notre Dame / it’s better from back here
10 points if you recognize the location / …… the “famous” steps from Midnight in Paris ! Just a short walk from our hostel. the areas is not as quiet and secluded as Woody Allen portrays it, as there is a bustling bar just across the street. regardless, we rang in midnight here on our first night, but our ride never came….
With my newfound affinity for cemetery strolls, there was no way I was going to miss the largest in Paris : Père Lachaise / here lies Edith Piaf
Oscar Wilde wins for my favorite gravesite / covered in lipstick kisses and notes of adoration.
Jim Morrison
I left my mark / CM
Climbing the Arc de Triumph / free for students or European residents under age 26 or something / we don’t turn down free admission
La Tour via L’Arc
I think I found Vivendi HQ! / building with the rooftop gardens / I’m going to stop by next time I’m in town / (to clarify, I interned at Vivendi in LA this summer)
Crazy lane-less circle around the Arc de Triumph / tilt shift just for fun
According to Bruno, Ladurée has the best macaroons / I did’t wait in line, but Elaine did!
But I just want to ice somebody
Shakespeare and Company : awesome bookstore on the Left Bank, with so much character and an intriguing history.
Supertramp
Flea market finds: 3 euro denim shirts x 3
L’As Du : only the best falafel I’ve ever eaten / Rue de Rosiers in the Marais district / traditionally a Jewish neighborhood, more recently a growing gay community / yummy food, the BEST vintage shopping, contemporary and modern art at the Pompidou Centre
Centre Pompidou / I hated the architecture, but neglected to take any photos which reflect this
Too much art to post
resting my feet on the terrace
The best audience any musician could ask for
Some sort of horse parade near Les Invalides
I never was a good thinker
Some other thinkers

Musée Rodin gardens at sunset
Paris purchases - vintage FILA sweatshirt / vintage silk dress / black & white starry scarf / red suede skinny belt / a good book, from Shakespeare and Company
